Management and Instruction
1. Teaching is a two-way street
2. Creating Equal Opportunity
3. Implement management strategies according to age-level
4. Creating a Community in and outside of the Classroom
- A giving and receiving of respect
- Students will not want to learn or engage unless I am going to learn and engage
- Mutual understanding of classroom policies and safety
2. Creating Equal Opportunity
- Accommodating and Modifying
- Scaffolding for students on both sides of the scale and everywhere in between
- For example: providing more or less choice within a lesson (modifying) OR creating a tool to assist in accurate measuring (accommodating)
- Providing several avenues to show understanding
- Every student is a unique learner
- For example: 1. Think, Pair, Share. Students think about what is asked, share with their partner, then share with the whole class
3. Implement management strategies according to age-level
- Routine
- Classroom setup
- Allow students to stand and/or work where they please
- Putting students closer to where I am that need more of my assistance
- Every student is able to be seen and included
- Making sure students know of safety and layout of room in order for instruction to go more smoothly
4. Creating a Community in and outside of the Classroom
- Inside:
- Giving students the guidance and opportunity to work with, and learn, from each other
- Example: seating a brand new ELL student next to a higher level ELL student
- Working as groups with large tables and collaborative art projects
- Giving students the guidance and opportunity to work with, and learn, from each other
- Outside:
- Community/Identity related art projects
- Parent/Guardian involvement
- Artsonia, art night with parents to fundraise, back-to-school night
- Healthy communication so they can know who I am, how I run my classroom, etc.
- End of the year art shows
